Peek Scanner is a barcode scanner for food and cosmetics that gives you a transparent, science-backed health score for any product. Scan a barcode and instantly see a full ingredient breakdown, allergen alerts, additive warnings, EU safety ratings, and a 0–100 health score — all explained in plain language.
Scores are calculated differently for food and cosmetics:
Score brackets: 76–100 Excellent · 51–75 Good · 26–50 Mediocre · 0–25 Bad. The full formula is viewable inside the app.
Nutri-Score is the official EU front-of-pack nutritional label, graded A–E (A = best). It factors in energy, saturated fat, sugars, salt, fibre, protein, and fruit/vegetable content. Peek Scanner displays the grade and explains exactly what drove the score up or down for that specific product.
NOVA classifies foods into four groups based on how heavily processed they are — from unprocessed whole foods (NOVA 1) to ultra-processed industrial formulations (NOVA 4). Research consistently links high NOVA 4 consumption to worse health outcomes. Peek Scanner shows the NOVA level and explains what it means for the specific product you scanned.
Peek Scanner covers both:
No. Peek Scanner is an informational tool. Scores and ingredient data are based on open databases and public EU safety classifications — not medical diagnosis or treatment recommendations. Always consult a healthcare professional for medical decisions.
If a barcode doesn't match any entry in Open Food Facts or Open Beauty Facts, you can use the photo scan fallback. Take a photo of the product and the AI pipeline (Gemini + visual search) identifies it, reads the ingredient list, and scores it the same way.
Scan history is stored locally on your device using an encrypted SQLite database. Your data never leaves your phone. Deleting the app removes all scan history.
Barcode lookups require an internet connection to query Open Food Facts and Open Beauty Facts. Once a product has been fetched, it's cached locally so you can reopen it offline. Scan history always works offline.
Yes — the barcode lookup works globally for any product in Open Food Facts or Open Beauty Facts. The EU-specific features (COSING safety data, Nutri-Score, NOVA) are most relevant for products sold in Europe, but the app can be used anywhere.
